PROTEST SONG DURING THE LEBANON WAR, 1982

The following song was originally written in Norwegian by Jackie Feinberg. In April, 2002, she translated it into English. We think it is a fine rendition, as she presented it to our group at our annual Lag B'Omer bonfire. Jackie claims it is much more beautiful in Norwegian, but we are, after all, the ENGLISH SPEAKERS of Ashdod. With thanks to Jackie for kindly letting us present it to you on our website, we invite you to read and enjoy.

Melody: Yerushalayim Shel Zahav

We gave our hand to our neighbors
In sign of peace - shalom,
We got no peace from our neighbors,
With sword they were to come.

We still believed in negotiations
And not in evil hate;
They want elimination
Of our Jewish state.

Refrain:
We made the desert grow and bloom,
We gave our refugees a room,
We have a wish to our neighbors:
Come, say shalom. (X2)

Then shall we find a place - a garden,
Where you shall dwell in peace,
It shall not be a place to harden
Your heart to fight the peace.

Hitting civilian population
By means of cruel terror
There's no justification
For such a kind of war.

Refrain:
Why can the world not understand
That our fight is to defend
Our children against terror,
To save our land.

We hate the war that makes our son
Into a killer - so many gone!
To save life - let us start living
In peace - shalom - shalom.
