CULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN ASHDOD By Samuel Klein When I arrived in Ashdod in 1989 there were only 70,000 inhabitants. Now, with a population of over 200,000 people, the city has grown in size and in an abundance of diverse cultural activities. Aside from the beautiful sunny and sandy beaches, along the Mediterranean Sea, we have a multi-cultural and diversified population where you can hear conversations from Israelis and new-comers originating from 70 different countries: people from Ehiopia, Phillipines, Georgia, France, Russia, India, North America, Argentina, South Africa and all over the Middle East, etc., etc., etc., all blend together in Ashdod, at the busiest port in Israel, on the beaches, in the parks, community centers etc. It is a colorful kaleidoscope of peoples and cultures. For example, at Yad Lebanim there are all types of Israeli shows, French shows, Chamber orchestra (over 40 musicians), performances, public sing- songs of popular and folk music. At Monart (Museum and Theater) we have variety performers and interesting people interviews on saturday mornings, all types of classes teaching ballet, modern and popular dance groups, painting and sculpture, art exhibitions ,etc. At the amphitheater there are concerts, star performers, various local orchestras, singers, choirs, ballet and varied dance groups. Free park and beach festivals during the long summer months, hosting the best and most popular singers and artists for the benefit of the population. Many neighbourhood Community Centers : musical operas, multi-lingual musical shows, stage performers, arts and craft classes & exhibitions, lectures, language Ulpans, etc. Ofek: adult lectures on all types of subjects, organized tours & lectures to different cities and locals in Israel. In all the malls (5 - 6) cinema theaters, cultural activities for all ages throughout the whole year, but in particular during children's holidays. Last but no least; All types of interesting, multilingual and multi colored peoples and faces from all over the world. What an interesting and beautiful group of people to look at and enjoy a symphony of many tongues, songs and sights!!! Never a dull moment in Ashdod!!
